BENJAMIN KITTREDGE AND CO. 1850 FOOT OFFICERS SWORD

One of the rarest foot officers sword marketed in Cincinnati 1861-1863 before confederate supporters burned it down on 134th main street is this one of two known to exsist model 1850 foot officers sword. Is well worn and clearly marked on the blade. These swords were sold to local soldiers traveling to the war thru Cincinnati in the early part of the war/ Articles state that Benjamin Kittredge bought as many as 200 foot swords into his shop. Most were imported blades such as this one and several were Collins and Co. blades. Much discussion is brought to the scabbard. Records do show that this scabbard was used as early as 1860, but mostly seen in later use. Mr Kittredge was a personal friend of Richard Gatling and ran his business supplying boots, uniforms, guns and cartridge boxes at his shop. Two rare tokens from his shop will be sold with his sword. Mr. Kittredge is buried in Spring-grove cemetery with 31 generals in Cincinnati. A photo of the sword is presented on his grave stone. History of what can be found on the Family is in a book along with the sword. The business was re-buil tin 1863 and stands across from the H.S.Poques building built in 1863. The building still stands w/ Rookwood tiles lining down the side of the building.
