ARCHIEVE COLLECTION OF RIVER BOAT CAPTAIN AND 33D OHIO RECRUITER.

Fresh from Wes Cowans Historical auction in 2004 is this fine collection from his family estate. Horace Merrill Horton. River boat captain since 1850 and town of Pomeroy Ohio is named after his wifes family. We have in order the following collection. Horstmann sword. gold double presented cane, marked the following: CAPTAIN H.M.HORTON POMEROY OHIO and on the other side PRESNTED BY THE OFFICERS, STEAMER CHARLIE MC DONALD POMEROY OHIO. Horace owned three steam ships along the Ohio river according to original newspaper articles that a attached to the collection. A very well known business man known all down the river from Pittsburg to Cincinnati. Governor Tod appointed Horace to the 33d Ohio to recruit in Pomeroy ohio and in Cincinnati. His original snuff box given from his daughter dated and presented marked 1860 and his cdv*s and original photos of him later in life. We also have all the original copies (not duplicates) of articles and letters of him including a shaving razor, buttons. Original Cincinnati Gazette papers go along with the sword and cane. Horace is buried in Pomeroy Ohio along with his wifes family ( the Pomeroys). After the civil war he maintained all the ships and took over his dads salt business and coal company in Pomeroy. He died in 1933 and was the oldest river boat captain on the Ohio River at the age of 91. He built the Churches along with the Pomeroy family in Pomeroy Ohio. about 80 pages. alot original copies dated are included with the collection. His records are articles are also in this grouping...... The sword is relic condition and looks to have been years mounted on one of his many boats.
